The Samui Elephant Sanctuary is the very first of its kind in southern Thailand.
Covering 10 acres of lush forest land, the reserve functions as a retirement home for these magnificent creatures who have spent most of their lives in abusive tourism and logging industries.

Both afternoon and morning programs are offered to visitors, so you can choose a schedule that’s most convenient for you. No matter which package you choose, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of these animals.
The elephant reserve was founded by Wittaya Sala-Ngam, who works with Saengduean Lek Chailert to preserve and care for these animals. Lek also founded the equally famous Elephant Nature Park and the Save Elephant Foundation. She was born in Baan Lao to a small hill tribe community, located north of Chiang Mai. She spent much of her life working with her grandfather to heal sick animals and eventually began advocating for the welfare of Asian elephants as she learned that they were becoming endangered.
Lek has been awarded the prestigious Hero of the Planet award by the Ford Foundation and has also been featured in the National Geographic’s documentary entitled Vanishing Giants.
Both Wittaya and Lek’s passion for helping elephants comes alive at the Samui Elephant Sanctuary, which invites volunteers just like you to spend some of your time with them for an unforgettable experience.
Some of the things you should bring along for your elephant adventure include a cap or hat, insect repellent, closed-toe shoes, reusable water bottles, and a change of clothes.
