The Big Buddha is an iconic sight on Samui. The golden, 12-meter high statue is elevated atop a platform featuring traditional décor as well as dragons. Locals typically visit the Big Buddha to pray, but during recent years, foreign visitors have also made this a popular stop in their itinerary. The best time to visit is during sunset when it isn’t too hot.
A visit to Koh Samui would not be complete without the Samui Elephant Sanctuary. Spanning 10 acres in size, the reserve is where majestic elephants come to spend their retirement years. This is an excellent opportunity to give the elephants some love, especially after they spent a long time in abusive tourism trades. Visitors can come for the day and opt from several packages that allow you to interact with these gentle creatures.
Take a stroll to explore the Fishermans Village located in Bophut. It’s quaint and charming; offering visitors a multitude of choices when it comes to restaurants, shops, and even resorts and guesthouses. However, the main highlight of the Fishermans Village is the presence of the historic Chinese-Thai wooden homes – some of which were built as far back as the 19th century.
