The distillery was opened by Elisa and Michel Gabrel back in 2003, both of whom are fruit growers. They came to Thailand to make fruit alcohol, and eventually set up the distillery. They use different fruits that grow in Thailand and started expansion when they learned to make rum out of a specific local cane. Eventually, they established the most successful, and the very first, French distillery in the country.

The distillation process takes around 4 months, which then dilutes to 40 degrees or 40 proof alcohol. The distillery produces thousands of bottles of rum a year. In May 2014, they opened the restaurant to cater to customers who wanted to have tasty food alongside their rum cocktails. Today, visitors can enjoy eating and drinking at the shaded terraces as well as the bar tables. Choose from delectable Thai and French cuisine or various select products that have been brought in from Bangkok.

New ownership has breathed life into the distillery, but the highlight here is the exceptional rum that they produce. Spend some time in the tasting room, where you can sample rums of different flavours such as coconut, orange, pineapple, and much more. Shots are inexpensive, and you can also purchase some bottles to take home with you. Before you leave, make sure you explore the beautiful gardens where you can see some of the fruit they use grown right there.

Magic Alambic Rum Distillery is located in 44/5 Moo 3, Bang Kao; a quieter area found in the south coast of Koh Samui. The distillery is open daily from 10am to 7pm – closing at 11pm on the weekends.
