Travelling from Koh Tao to Koh Samui is a terrific way to experience what the Thai islands have to offer.

Ferries are the only way to get around on the islands. There is one ferry company that departs from the Mae Haad pier and takes you to Maenam on Koh Samui. A ticket will cost only between 600 to 750 baht, although the price may depend on the departure time. These boats usually have one morning and one evening departure, and the sea journey takes around 1.5 hours. This is the quickest and most convenient way.

Another ferry company offers similar boat services, although there is a slight difference in trip duration and price. While it’s cheaper and slower, you can choose from three departures daily. The ferry picks up passengers from Koh Tao, but it has its own private pier.

Lastly, there is another ferry with only one express service daily. It will take you from Koh Tao to Koh Samui, which is inclusive of hotel pickups for just 450 baht.

Generally speaking, the travel time to and from these islands will take an average of two to three hours. If you tend to suffer from seasickness, it is recommended to go for the quicker boats even if you have to pay a little more.

It also helps to consider booking your ferry tickets with a combination of bus or train if you need to later on, so you can enjoy a hassle-free journey. Once you get to Koh Samui, you can hire a songthaew which is their local version of a taxi, to get around the island.
